Downey is a prospering city located only five miles from Orange County in Southern California. It currently has a population of approximately 110,000 people who live within the city limits. The city has a very central location and is close to several major freeways, making it an ideal place settle down or start a business.
The city has many amenities available to residents, such as top grade medical facilities, an excellent education system, and a selection of outstanding golf courses. It is also the home of the oldest McDonalds, as well as the first Taco Bell Eatery. The city also gave the band The Carpenters inspiration for many of their major hits. However, Downey is most well know for being the birthplace of the Apollo Space Program. Currently, the old NASA industrial plant site is undergoing new development.
The Downtown Farmers Market was approved in 2008 and since then has become a bustling hive of activity every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. People congregate here to sell their California grown products and handmade goods. It is also a community gathering place where people off all ethnicities gather and socialize. Some of the revenue goes towards improving and financing Downtown Downey. It is located on Second Street between La Reina and New St.
The cities economy is strongly based on retail and residential development. As such, Downey provides quality housing for its residents. The city is currently undergoing two redevelopment projects, as well as developing the former NASA industrial plant site.
The goal of the city is to convince new, quality businesses to build in the city, retain the ones they already have, and to provide infrastructure upgrades. Recently, the California Business Magazine ranked Downey as one of the top 25% of the best places to do Business in California. The City does it’s best to recruit commercial businesses to help ensure that it continues to have a solid sales tax base.
